I look at the cudgel in my other hand. Its dark brown surface is polished and smooth, and there are some dark stains on one side. There is a leather loop attached to the base of the handle that I can slip over my wrist to make it harder to lose or drop when cudgelling subordinates. There is a small orange sticker on the handle that says ‘SUPERMARKET PROPERTY’ in blue letters. I tap it against a stack of pallets. It makes a satisfying clonk on the wood. Raising the cudgel above my head, I take a swing. It feels balanced. It feels good. Placing an empty plastic bottle on the corner of the pallets, I take another swing.

Crack.

The bottle hurtles an impressive distance across the storeroom, and I strike myself on the back with the cudgel as I follow through.

Ow.

I rub my shoulder blade sheepishly. I put the cudgel in my pocket and head for the shop floor. Halfway there I take it out and use the loop to hang it from my wrist instead. Otherwise the replenishment assistants may think that I am more excited about their new jobs then they are.
