Chapter 5: 7 minutes

I go to the Turtle’s office. I am 7 minutes late. Carmella is leaving the staff room as I pass.

Hello, she says.

Hello, I say.

Where are you going? She asks.

I’m going to see the Turtle. I’m going to quit. I think.

Oh, because of what we talked about?

She puts her hand on my arm. It feels warm through my sleeve.

Don’t rush into anything, she says. It’s a big decision. Make sure it’s what you want to do. Think about it.

She rubs my arm, and smiles. My arm feels warm, like it has been resting in a sunbeam. If I quit today I won’t meet Carmella by the staff room anymore. I won’t be able to sit with Carmella while she has lunch. I won’t be able to hang my coat next to hers. My arm will grow cold.

Carmella squeezes my arm. Think about it.

Carmella turns away, heading back to the shop floor.

I think about it.
